Rethinking Stretching

Beyond ‘Feeling Loose'

Most people stretch. Fewer people understand why they’re doing it or what outcome to expect.

Often the goal is to feel “looser,” reduce “tightness,” or move better. Those ideas aren’t wrong — but without understanding what stretching actually does in the body, they tend to stay vague. Exploring the difference between general stretching and tissue-specific training helps explain why progress often stalls.

What’s the point of stretching?

Stretching can create length in tissue.

There is no universal “correct” amount of length. Appropriate tissue length depends on your history, sport, injury profile, and goals — just like strength. You wouldn’t train every lift maximally in every direction; you build what you need, plus a margin.

Length follows the same logic.

It also plays a direct role in strength potential. If you can pull a rubber band back farther, you have more range in which force can be produced. More available length allows for more potential strength in that range.
